Only last month, Adani was ranked as the third richest person in the world with a net worth of $120 billion. However, after US short-seller Hindenburg Research made allegations of accounting fraud against the company, the situation began to take a drastic turn.
Hindenburg alleged that its two-year investigation found the Adani group "engaged in a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades" and pointed to the group's "substantial debt".
The report sent ripples across the Indian stock market and ripped through market valuations of listed companies of the Adani Group.
The incident has also severely affected Adani's personal wealth as he has seen his wealth decline by $71 billion since the beginning of the year. Adani's wealth erosion is the fastest among the 500 richest people listed in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
